Calling others parents: What do you do when you've reached the last straw?

So lately, I've been really tired and depleted.  And having difficulty with, you know, the difficulty of toddlerhood.  And I've been losing it more than I care to admit.  And I've sort of been feeling like my old coping tricks aren't working to keep me on the even keel.

So I'm sending a call out to the blogosphere:  I need some new zen-like-inner-calm-accessing tips!  What do you do when you start to lose your cool?  And does it work?

  1. I usually cry, as an initial response. Jude sometimes gets a time out so that I don't strangle him. (If I could figure out how to get Imogen into a time out, she'd get one too.)

  2. Erm, I wasn't done there... my computer has a mind of its own.

So, as I was saying, initial response= mama meltdown followed immediately by further incident prevention. Then I do deeeep breathing. Check the fridge for a supply of coca-cola*. Drink one. Apologize to the kids for being a crappy mum.

Words of wisdom, eh? I'm sure there must be more positive coping methods. I've just not found them.

*Later in the day, the coke may be replaced by wine. Sad but true.

  3. I stroller like there is no tomorrow. It soothes her and me. I have pushed that stroller in the pouring rain crying when I didn't know what else to do. It always helps, but I like it better when it is sunny.

  4. I use my friend TV so mommy can have a time out and get a grip. Then I call the babysitter and make sure Nat and I can get a break in the next 48 hours.

  5. Is sounds to me like you need a break!! Whenever I get to this point I strongly suggest to my husband to take the kids away for at least 4 hours. I find this more relaxing than going out by myself because I get to do all those things in the house I can't do with the kids around...like take a nap or sit on the couch and watch a whole movie without interruption. I find by the time the kids get back I miss them and feel ready to continue on...usually helps me make it through a couple a weeks before I start going mad again.
